Progo River
Progo river is one of the main rivers crossing the Yogyakarta city. Progo River stream zone breadth is about
2380 km2 passing through Province
of Central Java and Yogyakarta city with the Progo river length is 140 km. But 75% of the Progo River stream
is on Yogyakarta city.
The main upstream of Progo River is Mount Sindoro.
It is also upstreamed on Mount Merapi, Mount Menoreh, Mount Merbabu,
and Mount Sumbing, then it firth into Trisik
Beach located on the south coast of
Java and finally flow to the Indian Ocean. There are some minor river flowing into the Progo River, they are Krasak river and Bedog river which
is upstreamed on Mount Merapi, Tangsi river which is upstreamed on Mount Sumbing,
Tingal river which is upstreamed on Mount Sijambul,
and Elo river which
is upstreamed on Mount Merbabu.
While on the firth area of Progo river is known assand mining area. On the upstream area, precisely in Magelang district, the
stream of Progo River is used for rafting sport area since Progo river has challenging rapid streams to be adventured.
Because of the stream’s width
of Progo river, so the areas nearby Progo river suit to be used as agricultural
area. For example, in district Ngluwar, Regency of Magelang, The Dutch has built
a dam from Progo river as irrigation source for local residents. It also becomes
a recreation area and it is well known with the name “Ancol Bligo”. This
irrigation stream flows from Ngluwar to the east side devides Regency of Sleman and
then flows to Regency of Klaten which is well known as “Selokan Mataram” or “
Selokan Van Der Wijck”.
