Traditional ceremony of Becekan is also known as Dandan Kali or Memetri Kali, which means taking care of or fixing the environment of the river, in the form of a ceremony of requesting rain in the dry season among Sub District of Kepuharjo, District of Cangkringan, Regency of Sleman.
Water from the river is very important for the local people for farming activities. It is told that right after the ceremony, there would be rain like cat and dog until the ground were soaking wet (becek or becekan). Becek also means as an offering in the form goat meat (for gulai). Dusun Pagerjurang, Dusun Kepuh and Dusun Manggong are usually done this ceremony.
It is held in several phases: First, memetri sumur at Dusun Kepuh as the only hamlet that has a well; Second, Ceremony of Becekan is done in the middle of River of Gendol; Third, particular ceremony at each hamlets.
This ceremony is aimed to ask the Almighty for raining season to make the land fertile, therefore the people would get prosperity as well. Timing of ceremony is optimizing "pranotomongso" that is on "mongso kapat" (fourth period) on Jumat Kliwon (friday), but if on "mongso kapat" there is no "Jumat Kliwon", then it must be on "mongso kalimo".
Moding will lead the Becekan ceremony and it is followed by the whole three hamlet's people. It is important to notice that the whole ceremony is only done by men only and all of the offerings cannot be touched by the women; the goat must be male also.
The main goal of the ceremony is to ask for safety and prosperity to the Almighty and also giving particular offerings to the spirits that stay among them in Mount Merapi in order to make the local people calm, peaceful, and free from any danger, therefore there would be a good harmony between human being and the nature.
